SIOMA Town Council has completed the formation of Ward Development Committees (WDC) following the end of tenure of office for previous office bearers.
The two and half years mandate for previous committee members came to an end on February 15th, 2024.
It should be noted that the Government of President Hakainde Hichilema is committed to actualizing a devolved system of governance as prescribed in the Constitution (Amendment) Act No. 2 of 2016. Article 147.
Further Article 148 establishes that local governance shall be undertaken through sub-structures as platforms for citizen participation in decision making and development process at the local level.
In affirming the provisions of the Constitution, Part V of the Local Government Act No. 2 of 2019, the establishment of WDCs has been provided for.
Sioma District has 12 Wards and 47 Zones where officers from the local authority conducted sensitization campaigns leading to WDC elections held from April 6th to May 6th 2024.
Management at the council is pleased to note that the elections were held in a free and fair manner following all laid down procedures.
Management would further like to thank everybody who participated in the Zonal Elections.
WDCs are a key component in facilitating structured community participation espoused in the Republican Constitution.
Community participation is at the core of actualizing decentralization and intended development at all levels and Sioma Town Council, working with other stakeholders is focused in ensuring that this is achieved.
